This is a delightful quick read about a mythical small island nation off the South Carolina coast of the US. Its residents worship Nevin Nollop, inventor of The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. However, when the letters of that line begin, one by one, to fall off the monument to Nollop, the High Council degrees that those letters may not be used in language or correspondence without serious penalty unto death. Of course the day is finally saved, but not without loss of many island residents, to flogging, death, or emigration. A fun read.
